A summer of new video releases and live cams brings relaxation, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, into your own home.
While nothing can replace the experience of being there, California’s Monterey Bay Aquarium is bringing the aquarium to you this year, producing a wide range of long-format videos suitable to work or relax to.
Fresh from YouTube, Krill Waves Radio serves up the perfect late summer lo-fi hip-hop instrumental soundtrack while Bigfin Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) dance on the screen. These squid are just one of several displays in the Aquarium’s special exhibit, Tentacles.
More installments of Krill Waves Radio are promised, but if the soothing grooves of “Krill Wave Radio” aren’t your musical taste, perhaps you’ll enjoy the 4.5-hour livestream recording from the aquariums Kelp Forest Cam. This is the Sway features easy-listening instrumentals.
If that’s still too much of a soundtrack, consider the ambient, soothing sounds of the Open Sea Cam in the video Pelagic Magic. One million gallons of tuna, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, and more will glide across the screen for hours as the bubble curtain shimmers, keeping inhabitants from swimming into the glass. Throw it on the big screen and turn down the lights.
But if what you need is something that is visually mesmerizing, without the soundtrack? You can always watch the Sea Nettles (Chrysaora fuscescens) on the Aquarium’s Live Jelly Cam, which started streaming via YouTube on June 19th, 2020. It’s always online, day or night (of course, it’s a black screen at night, but the previous 12 hours of footage are always available).
