This April, the Pacific Northwest Marine Aquarium Society (PNWMAS) hosted Eli Meyer, the founder of AquaBiomics, which focuses on DNA sequencing to assess the microbiome of reef aquariums. The company has been running for 2 years now, aggregating approximately 1000 samples from hundreds of aquariums, compiling a large dataset and opening new understandings of the microbial community in reef tanks. One of the most compelling topics investigated covers pathogens of fish and corals, and revelations that can lead to actually “tuning” the microbial community of a reef aquarium.
Meyer first broached the topic with CORAL readers in 2021, with his article The Reef Microbiome (CORAL Magazine, July/August 2021). It’s nearly a year later, and there’s new ground to cover! Our thanks to Meyer, and PNWMAS, for making this presentation publicly available for the benefit of reef aquarists everywhere.
