Over the past few years, CORAL readers have time and again been introduced to exciting underwater footage shared by Reef Patrol. Vanessa Cara-Kerr, the primary underwater filmmaker at Reef Patrol, has launched a new YouTube video series aiming to share insightful underwater filming tips that can help every amateur or professional diver become a better underwater photographer and videographer.
Cara-Kerr’s first episode focuses on underwater camera housing selection, use, and maintenance. Cara-Kerr’s unique sensibilities of video editing come through with playful and engaging delivery while discussing aspects of camera housings, including housing material, depth ratings, housing ports, lens integration, and camera operation. As you reach the second half of the film, the discussion turns to housing maintenance and repair, spare parts, vacuum systems, and leak alarm systems. The tutorial concludes with an in-depth look at housing controls, the interface that stands between you and your camera, and an explanation of how to select the housing that’s right for you.
“At the end of the day, it’s not only the facts that matter, it’s how the housing feels and works for you,” concludes Cara-Kerr, encouraging viewers to visit a specialty camera store or a dive show to experience housing options firsthand before making a purchase.
